Real
Life Music Publishing offers both sync and mechanical
licenses for all the compositions in our catalog,
most for a nominal fee compared to other major publishers.
We normally license sync requests directly and license
mechanicals through the Harry
Fox Agency.
Before you contact us, please know that licenses
are contractual documents
- make sure you are familiar with the "basics"
of music licensing and consult your attorney before
signing any documents.
MUSIC LICENSING BASICS
Synchronization
licensing
is the licensing of songs for visual images (i.e.
films, commercials, etc.). This license conveys
synchronization rights from the controller of the
copyright-sometimes one publisher, sometimes two
or more--to a music user. If you hear a song on
TV or in a movie theater, the music user has obtained
a sync license from the music publisher for the
song, and has also licensed
the master recording of that song through a separate
master use license from the record company.
Mechanical
licensing
is the licensing of songs for audiotape or compact
disc. A mechanical license gives a record company
or other party the right to reproduce the songwriter's
composition on a record. Mechanical rights are given
in order to reproduce the song on actual CD's and
tapes, and to sell the reproduced copies to the
public. It is the responsibility of record labels
to pay mechanical royalties to the owner of the
song and their music publisher for the sale of CD's
or tapes. RLMP negotiates this license through Harry
Fox with the record company who wants to record
any of our writer's songs.
